Dunstaffnage Castle

Dunstaffnage Castle dates back to the 13th century, making this one of the oldest stone castles still standing in Scotland. It was built on the end of a large rock on overlooking the Firth of Lorn, being on a promontory it is surrounded by the sea on three side and has stunningly picturesque views from the battlements.

Onsite Facilities: open year round, onsite museum, onsite picnic area, onsite souvenir/book shop, car park, self guiding allowed

Notes: The grounds and gardens are accessible for people in wheelchairs, but the castle itself is not.

History & Archaeology

Of particular note at the castle is the so-called ‘new house’ in the courtyard that was built in 1725. And, in the garden tucked away amongst the trees is the 13th century Dunstaffnage Chapel.
