Bayeux Tapestry

Museum/Theme Park - Medieval

The Bayeux Tapestry is neither a tapestry nor was it made in Bayeux. It is a 70 metre long embroidery made in the 11th century that tells the story of the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. Thought to have been commissioned by the Bishop of Bayeux, Odo - William's half brother, there is however no agreement on where it was made.

This is one of those objects I never tire of visiting! There are two components: the tapestry and the museum. The Tapestry is in a glass case on the ground floor. I strongly recommend taking the audio guide (included in the entrance fee), although it does rush through the story (about 25 minutes) it is better than nothing. Be careful, the audio device no longer allows you to pause the commentary and then continue; it starts automatically as you enter the display room. This does have the advantage of keeping visitors moving, which is particularly helpful when there are large tour groups (which have priority at this museum). Once the commentary is finished there is nothing to stop you going back and examine at your leisure.

The museum is located upstairs, and is visited after the Tapestry. It provides a background to the story and times of the tapestry.
