Séviac Roman Villa
Roman - Villa, Mosaic Floor
Built in the 4th century AD, Séviac Villa was a luxurious mansion with a typical villa layout, including an inner open courtyard (peristyle), heated baths and pool, a hypocaust system for under floor heating, and over 600 m2 of mosaic floors. The mosaics are said to be amongst the most exceptional in the region.

History & Archaeology
The remains of this spectacular villa were found quite by chance in the 1860s during the building of a farmhouse. Over the years there have been various programmes of excavations. The first being before the First World War, and the most recent being a 30 year stretch each summer from 1967 to 1997.
In 1974 the so-called Amants de Séviac (Séviac Lovers) were excavated. These are the skeletons of a young couple buried sometime between the 6th and 7th centuries.

We visited Seviac in September 2011 when we spent a week in Gascony, near Condom. The Roman villa is just outside Montreal. When we were there a small group of people were part of a tour in French, but they gave us a book in English and we wandered around on our own. The setting is beautiful and the mosaics are some of the best I have seen. I really enjoyed our visit.
Afterward we went into Montreal (a beautiful town) to see the small Seviac Museum and then had a very good lunch (at L'escale on the main square).
